!Movies! - Old - New - !Movies!
  • Before the wipe, there was a movie thread, here's another:

So, half of what I say is paraphrased from movies... I'm unoriginal, sue me.

I love a lot of flicks, here are some both old and new:

    Clerks
    Dogma
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
Harold & Kumar - Either one
    The Aviator
    Holy Grail
    Charlie Wilson's War
    The Lost Boys
    The 'Burbs
    The Last Boy Scout
    The 'Oceans' movies, 11, 12, 13
    Memento
Serenity (But only because of Firefly, which isn't a movie!)
Oh Brother! Where Art Thou... actually, almost all of the Cohen Brothers flicks.. 'Cept 'Barton Fink' and 'The Lady Killers'.
    Stand By Me

    Plus a million others...

Leonardo Dicaprio has been firing on all cylinders lately, dontcha think? His last batch o' flicks have been excellent.

Body Of Lies, Blood Diamond, Shutter Island, The Departed, The Aviator, Inception...

All quality flicks, in my opinion...

    Anywho...

  • What's with the numbers in () beside your movies, K?

Two movies that I remember making me laugh until I cried:

Team America: World Police - The puppet puking scene.

Hot Rod - The rolling down the hill scene.

To my knowledge there are only 3 good 'down a hill scenes':

    Princess Bride
    Swordfish
    Hot Rod

  • Whats a movie?
  • A moving picture! It's like a picture! But you put a lot of them together to make it look like it's moving!

    K: I gets it now...
  • I just watched the Big Lebowksi for the first time the other day, if you haven't seen it, I suggest you do. I was chuckling nonstop!
  • The Big Lebowski is one of all time favorite movies.. So quotable.. So good..

It's what got me started on loving Philip Seymour Hoffman.. who's fucking brilliant in damn near everything he's in.
  • I have far too many favourite movies. I'll try to shorten my list a bit.

    Rear Window
    American Beauty
    Goodfellas
    Dawn of the Dead (1978)
    Black Christmas (1978)
    Dumb and Dumber
    Detroit Rock City
    Memento
    The Philadelphia Story
    The Squid and the Whale

  • I have always felt that JFK, is an underrated movie. It kinda got panned a bit, but the performances are all top-notch. Especially Joe Pesci and Tommy Lee Jones.
  • I'll throw my top five movies in:

    Casablanca
    The Godfather
    When Harry Met Sally
    The Godfather Part II
    The Shawshank Redemption

    WATS
  • Watched the wicker man recently (the original, not the shitty remake) which was quite trippy.
  • Greatest movie ever imo = "The Four Feathers"

    notable mentions:
    Shawshank
    Godfather 1-3
    Shotaz

yeah thats the remake. the original is much more .... i dont know how to describe. apparently filmmakers really love it. its very 70s though, if youve watches a lot of the trppy cult movies from that time period you'd understand.
  • The original Wicker Man is well-worth watching. It's a creepy/well-made film. I haven't watched it in years, so I should watch it this month and try to get my moneys worth out of the $70 DVD set I bought of it.

What I saw of the remake was pretty awful. Cage did a horrendous job.
  • Heh heh:

That was amazing. I laughed, a lot.

I don't think I've ever seen that flick before... but it looks so bad...

When he bear slaps that chick I damn near fell off the couch.
  • I saw Magruber recently and laughed my ass off. It's so stupid, but soooo quoteable.

Me and my buddies are quoting it constantly now. It's Will Forte's 'Anchorman'.

Definitely worth a watch if you're into a dumb movie.

It's right up there with 'Anchorman' and 'Hot Rod' as being some of the funniest stupid shit I've seen.
  • Anchor man is godly
  • My friend made me watch MacGruber a couple of weeks ago because he's in love with it. I went in expecting to hate it because I don't normally like movies that are 'so bad they're good' or have really ridiculous humor, and have never been an SNL fan. However, I didn't mind it. Nothing amazing, but it was pretty entertaining.

I went to see The Town a week and a half ago and enjoyed it. It was a solid film and Ben Affleck did a good job with it. I just didn't really like the ending and felt that it was missing a 'wow factor.'

I also went to see The Social Network this week. It was pretty good. Solid, but nothing that you really need to see in theatres. The only reason to go to the movies for it is Trent Reznor's awesome soundtrack.
  • I watched a couple movies on TMN over the last two nights - The Lovely Bones and The Blind Side.

I really enjoyed The Blind Side. It was really well-made, had an excellent cast and was incredibly entertaining/well-made. I think it might be the first time I've actually been impressed by Sandra Bullock's acting. Great film.

As for The Lovely Bones - what a weird movie that was. I wasn't a big fan.
  • I watched 'Street Thief' today on Netflix. It was entertaining as all hell.
  • Watched Rampage and the entire Iron Man animated series on Netflix in one night on my 360. Yea, Netflix is awesome. :D
  • I keep wanting to watch Rampage. Was it worth the time? It's Uwe Boll, right?
  • A friend and I decided to go see Paranormal Activity 2 the other night. I thought it was pretty good - definitely better than I expected it to be. I liked how it explained the original film and the fact that they amped up the action a bit more.

However, if you didn't enjoy the first one much, you're probably not going to like its sequel. The movies are quite similar.

It was interesting, and the twist at the end was pretty awesome...
  • I recently watched "This is England" .... great film. More touching and humanizing than the trailer leads on.

  • I watched 'Flock of the Dodos' last night. It's a documentary about the debate over 'Intelligent Design' vs. 'Evolution'.

It's lighthearted and not at all preachy.. which was nice.
  • Plan 9 From Outer Space
  • Watched 'Primer' on Netflix.

Great little budget flick about time travel. It's a bit of a headfuck.
  • I went to see Due Date last night with some friends. It was alright. Nothing special, though. I was expecting more from it.
  • I saw Due Date last night as well. Was alright, not bad. I enjoyed it. Had several laughs. It always helps when you go into a movie not expecting much though.
  • There wasn't much on TV today, so I just watched The Taking of Pelham 123 (the remake.) It was...alright.
  • I watched a cam of 'Faster' last night. It was ok. Nothing too special about it... kind of slow too, for a movie named 'Faster'. If that had been 'The Rocks' first outing into moviedom, I'd say his career was going to be short lived. Not that he was bad or anything.. it just wasn't all that good.

Going to watch 'The Town' tonight.. plus 'Deathly Hallows' sometime soon.

  • ************************SPOILER ALERT********************************[added by @Rajio]

Saw Shutter Island yesterday. I think that in the end when he said "sometimes its better to die a good man, or live a bad man" I thought that he meant that he actually was not crazy and he doesn't want to live the evil man they are trying to force onto him, but my sister thinks he meant that he knows he is the bad man for killing his wife, but he wants to pretend to be the good guy still and die that way. This is the kind of stuff I like in a thriller movie, having to guess even when it is over.

  • That's a pretty big spoiler in that there post. You should identify that a bit more for the next time.

*************SPOILER IN ABOVE TOPIC AND BELOW******************

I was of the opinion that he was cured, and knew what he was doing at the end.
  • OMG. I am so sorry to everyone who ends up reading that post. Can't believe I forgot to put a spoiler alert. This is one of the times where a 5 min edit time is not very good.
  • I watched fear and loathing in las vegas!
It was pretty good, I enjoyed it
  • I feel I've seen pretty much every movie made. I average 4-8 movies a week. I just love movies.
  • I'm the same, Wik. Usually a movie a night. Sometimes two.. today I watched Deathly Hallows, which was good and 'The Town' which was also good. Mostly good. I like heist movies and it didn't disappoint. Now I'm going to start 'Dinner for Schmucks' and hit the hay... probably.

I love that movie. It's one of my favourites.

Where The Buffalo Roams is another Hunter S. Thompson-based film. It's alright.

    -----

I watched half of Dazed and Confused the other night and will have to finish it sometime soon. I've seen it a couple of times before. It's a good film. My friend had brought it up, so I decided to watch it again. I still maybe prefer Fast Times, though.

    -----

I went on a bit of a renting spree today. Since we have a Gold membership at Blockbuster, we're able to rent a free Favourites film when we rent something else, so I rented Tron Legacy and Leon the Professional for free. I've never seen it before, so I'm really looking forward to watching it.

I ended up finding a copy of Tron at another Blockbuster so I rented that and rented my sister a movie. I had a coupon to get a free new release rental with a paid rental, so I also rented George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead. I've been a fan of his for years, but have yet to see it.
  • Leon the Professional is an AMAZING movie. I am sure you will like it Wick.
  • Leon the Professional is an AMAZING movie. I am sure you will like it Wick.

I've heard a ton of great things about it. I just never got around to watching it for some reason. It's just one of those movies I'd always think about having to watch, but then forget about when I was at a video store or at a friend's (if they owned it.) It's one of the classics I haven't gotten around to seeing yet.

Looking forward to watching that and TRON very much.
  • I watched Tron last night. I liked it. It's really unique and creative.

I also watched Diary of the Dead. It's definitely the weakest in the series, but it was alright. George Romero used to shoot all of his movies in Pittsburgh but he ended up moving his base of operations here to Toronto, because it was a lot cheaper. I think he lives here now. That film was apparently shot in Toronto, Hamilton, Uxbridge, Port Dover and one other part of Ontario. There's some good scenery in it.
  • I watched 'Restrepo', Dinner For Schmucks' and 'Cyrus' over the last couple days. My feelings were 'Meh', 'Heh... meh..' and 'Meh?'.

Cyrus was pretty good... the other two... well... I dunno. Especially since 'Restrepo' is a docu. about the kids (US Soliders) over in Afghanistan right now.

Watching that movie made me feel not so good about their war effort. Just a bunch of kids, no one knows what the fuck is going on, they've got their 'Mission' and a bunch of weapons. Have at 'er fellas. I guess it's probably always been that way, but watching it happen in a documentary was depressing.
  • I'm planning to watch Leon: The Professional tonight. I hope it won't end up being overhyped for me. I've heard nothing but great things, so I'm going in with high expectations.
  • Tomorrow night on History channel, they are playing JFK. The Oliver Stone movie about the assassination of JFk, it is a good movie. One of my fav's.
  • Nice. I've heard good things about that film. I bought the Oliver Stone Collection years ago and JFK is included. I've yet to watch it though. I really should do that soon. I still haven't watched Platoon either.
