The Legend of Korra
  • I know some of you are going to be watching this. I just checked out the first 2 episodes this weekend and I'm really pleased and optimistic. The Last Airbender series was fantastic and its looking like this one is a good evolution from that.
  • Yep. Great sequel series in perspective. Love the characters and the story plot so far. Except, they did a little reference mistake: When Tenzin tells Korra that Ang had issues learning Earth bending. Actually it was Fire bending he had issues with 'cause he accidently burnt Katarra when he first tried using that element and got afraid of hurting people while using Fire bending 'til he took Prince Zuko as a mentor to teach him how to control the techniques associated to that element.

Still love that sequel though 'cause Korra is adorable, Tenzin is funnily too serious, and Milo is just plain funny by himself. Can't wait to see more of Legend of Korra. =D
  • Yes we noticed that too - but we think maybe since they don't keep that great history records in that world, and its all hear-say it may account for him not fully understading his dad's childhood ;)

  • Also that tease about Zuko's Mom's story had me shaking my fist at the screen SO HARD!

Quoting Tenzin "Don't bring his (my) mom into this" *Awkward flute elongated note sounds out of annoyance* XD

Being a Lore Fanatic I respectfully disagree but see where the confusion stems from. Aang was able to firebend naturally in the first season, even though he was A) learning it out of order and B) rushing past the fundamentals. The ONLY reason that he stopped was because he had hurt Katara, but that was a case of won't and not can't. Also, he technically got over it when at the air temple with Guru Pathick and releasing the fear of firebending to open his Chakras. From that point on, Aang was a firebender officially. Untrained, yes, but still a firebender. It took Zuko and the Sun Warriors to get him to his full potential.

Earthbending, however, Aang was totally terrible at. He couldn't do simple tasks and didn't have the right mindset. It took Sokka being in physical danger for him to get his head straight and do it properly.

    On to Korra....

GOD DAMN IT THIS SHOW IS TOO GOOD. As I posted in another thread, I expected the amazing voice acting, and action scenes, and story. But daaaamn. The music, the atmosphere, and the Spiderman cops. The Support characters are amazing, and I couldn't help but laugh my ass off at the reference to Zuko's mother. That was priceless.

Also, Meelo is a boss: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=mlF18VoerCE
  • For those of you who'd want to watch the episodes but don't want to wait for it to come to Nick Canada or D/L 'em here's the link where you can catch the episodes weekly through Nick.com (U.S.) http://www.nick.com/videos/clip/legend-of-korra-103-the-revelation-full-episode.html
  • ^ Great find! I'm amazed to find a US based site which isn't locked away to us unenlightened Canadians.

    Freaking amazing episode 3 btw.
  • So I just watched Episode 3 again, a few things are kind of bothering me/causing me to speculate quite heavily.

    Spoiler:
Any ideas as to why Mako can generate lightning? Isn't that supposed to be quite the advanced technique? Since the advanced techs of Metalbending/Lightning seem to be up for grabs, does that mean that Korra can heal/bloodbend? Katara was her master after all, so it's plausible that she can at least heal, but I don't know if Katara would teach anyone, even the Avatar, how to bloodbend.
  • Oh, Korra. I'm starting to love you more and more. <3333 <br />Btw, new episode is up on Nick.com guys. =D
  • Ive heard good things about this, apprently Korra and Young Justice have the best Animation currently in cartoon. But I never cared for Airbender so I doubt I'd watch this
  • ^^ You're missing out on probably the best cartoon i've seen in years. Maybe you should take an hr and watch an episode or 2 to see if you'd change your mind. Korra deserves some <3 and she has boobs. BOOBS I SAY!! YOU HEAR ME?? BOOBS!!!! lol XD
  • PS thanks for the spoiler tag Nebellron. I'm still not on to ep 3 yet. heh.
  • I just marathoned The Last Airbender this week and it was amazing. Started Legend of Korra an hour ago and I can't say that I am really enjoying it very much.

I actually liked Korra better than TLA, just because Korra had a super strong story (even though it had slightly weaker characters) and presented itself amazingly.

The last 4 episodes were fantastic IMO.

    Spoiler:
Also, who else cried when Bei Fong had her bending sealed?

I started to like it a little more as I watched through but the last episode was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.
    Spoiler:
The fact that she gets all her bending but air sealed and then gets it back in 5 minutes is lame. All she had to do was cry like a little brat and her powers came back, and more.

The Last Airbender is my favorite cartoon of all time and Korra isn't even half of what it is. At least not yet anyways.

Loads of spoilers here, so everything is going in a tag!

    Spoiler:
Okay, so I do take a couple exceptions to what you had to say.

Because of the nature of the universe it was basically accepted that Korra was going to activate the Avatar state at some point during the finale. Surprisingly it wasn't when her bending was being sealed, and I think that shows great restraint by the storytellers.

So if you look at the fact that her bending was NOT being sealed by energybending, that means that the actual sealing is done in some other way. We know from when Aang got shot by lightning that Katara was able to use her healing (a waterbending art) to detect and relieve chakras in other people. Thus, it is conceivable that any waterbending would have the ability to affect the Chakras in another individual. Amon would have paired his immense water and blood bending with knowledge from the Chi blockers to create a block in someone's body, thus shutting down their bending. But how??

Notice how the act of sealing for both energybending and bloodbending was to place a finger on the forehead of the victim. What is on the forehead? The Light Chakra. Recap: The Light Chakra is opened by Insight, and Sealed by Illusion. The greatest Illusion is Separation, so by sealing the Light Chakra it creates the Illusion that a person is separated from their bending.

When she had her Chakra Sealed, she had no recourse but to dig deep into herself to try to save Mako. Remember, she didn't instantly get Airbending when she was sealed, it took Mako being nearly killed (Something that would have sent an un-sealed Avatar straight into Avatar Mode) and then she was able to pull airbending out.

Afterwards, at the south pole, feeling completely separated from those she cares about and alone, Aang comes to her to say that this was in fact an Illusion, and restores her.

My only issue with this is WHY THE HELL COULDNT KATARA RESTORE HER??? Did Katara not know about the Chakras? That seems like the sort of thing Aang might have taught her about. Amon knew about them obviously, so why wouldn't the "best healer in the world" not know what was going on?

I may have overthought this, but it was me trying to fill in any plot holes with knowledge from the previous series. It seems to make sense for the most part.

    Spoiler:
I figured it was like he used waterbending to block chakras. he didnt "remove" bending like ang did to the phoenex lord in the last airbender, but rather block/hide that person's natural bending ability. so to me it totally makes sense. I mean look at what it looked like when ang got the phoenex lord .... it looked VERY different.

It seemed like it was possible just well beyond katara to restore her. remember it was said before, the only thing more powerful than blood bending is the avatar.

my wish is that korra should have had more of a spiritual moment before/during unlocking the avatar state. the whole spiritual aspect wasnt touched enough for my liking

  • Aman has to be one of the most bad ass vilains in a cartoon EVER!! And Korra is too sweet to not love her story.

Now, let's compare both series. Korra has boobs, Ang took an arrow to the forehead. Korra wins. LOL

    You are a freaking genius.

    Spoiler:
The only problem I had with it though is that they made it seem like the worst thing in the world that her bending was blocked and then after crying 5 minutes later, her bending is restored. Couldn't they have waited it out a couple episodes at least?

So did Katara, Ty Lee, Azula, Mai and Suki.
  • So I finally started watching Avatar on Netflix. See what all the hub bub is about.

  • You are a freaking genius.

Why thank you! Sadly I put in way more effort to figure it all out than the show did to explain me, and I do heartily agree with the criticism. Hopefully Season 2 will take its time explaining in great detail just how right I am!
  • I'm 8 episodes in...the show is actually kinda good. I was told there was a point it becomes mind blowing...is that after the first or second season?
  • @LegendofMyth It gets really good after the first season and amazingly good part way through season 2. I have never seen any cartoon near as good as TLA.
  • If this happens in season 2 then I might give the series another shot
    Spoiler:
    image
  • on possible direction they could go is if they continue to play up the whole WW2 (and WW1) angles with the whole 'new technology', 'genocide' and 'evolution' ideas....

We saw near the end of season 1 it was starting to look like the benders were like jews, soon to be persecuted by the private police ... rounded up and executed. you got that distinct feeling when the council was all taken out for example. it was a hitleresque power-grab. also the shock at all this new war technology mirros what happened in the world wars very closely. hell the whole show emulates the 1920-40s so much. Hell they already have 'allied forces' (aka the united army?)

now just extrapolating on how techonology, and bending have evolved from the last airbender .... earth bending has evolved to splinter off metal bending into its own thing, water bending now has more bloodbenders who have evolved from it too .... now think back to sparky sparky boom boom man, and think about WWII. what if someone (even Korra) developes the a nuclear bomb level power. something so dangerous, perhaps she is forced to take bending away from everyone? We haven't seen how firebending has really evolved aside from the fact that Mako can lightning (electricity) bend, showing its possibly not as specialized as it used to be.

The ideas in that above image are right though, even if it doesnt happen like that exactly with those characters, the principal is true.
