Reviewing the final product based entirely on the trailer
  • In this thread I intend to start writing reviews of games, and movies based on nothing but the trailer. To be clear will not be reviewing the trailer itself, but the final product. Who cares if its not out yet? Not me!

    Feel free to play along....
  • First up: Forza Horizon

  • Photorealistic graphics, vast open world environments, a host of many vehicles, ranging from affordable sedans to Italian Supercars
    The handling is spot on.

The menu system was a bit dry, and lacked any sort of real "umph"
  • Forza Horizon Review

The graphics are pretty amazing in this game. the landscapes are fairly barren but superbly detailed. the clouds move a bit too unrealisticly fast though, which breaks the emersion a little.

With the previous forza games the emphasis has been on meticulously detailed car models. This time the focus has shifted to beautifully rendered specators. Forza TV is back and the crowd physics really shine here.

Photography mode is back too but this time you are put in the shoes of one of the spectators taking photos with your trusty camera phone. Thats right, you get to play as a virtual fanboy!

The biggest problem with the game so far is the track design. For some reason Playground Games has decided to stick with pretty much straight roads instead of proper racing tracks. Its great that porche is now included in the game but the lack of any cornering really makes it pointless.

On the upside, the lack of turning makes it a lot easier to enjoy the pretty skies.

    8.6/10. Editors Choice.

    Saints Row The Third Review

If you like logos and fades to black, you're going to love Saints row the third. Some will complain that the campaign is a little short but it really does have near infinite replay value so you get your money's worth, especially when you try the kinect enabled multiplayer.

The writing is above and beyond most other titles and while the plot won't keep you guessing, you definitely won't be bored. Unfortunately they seem to have left the ending a bit too open ended, obviously leaving the door open for a DLC addon.

While on the subject of DLC, the optional Lens Flare pack is a great bonus. I wouldn' play the game without it frankly.

Also as a nice bonus, the game supports google+, facebook, twitter and youtube integration, making this the most social Saints Row game yet. Its a great feature, letting you know how your friends are progressing and helping to share your achievements with the world. Just don't spoil the ending for anybody!

    Soundtrack available on itunes.

    7.8/10

yep, though i think i was in the minority who didnt think the trailer everybody jizzed in their pants over was anything beyond "meh" and expected another bad zombie game.

  • Halo 4 Review

This game picks up right where Halo 3 left off, with Master Chief descending towards a forerunner planetoid, being pulled into its access port. The game is like halo kicked up a notch, and so is this new installation. We were on ring worlds before, where our adventures took place on the inner surface of a massive ring. Think of this as a sphere world, with the landscape covering the inner surface of the planetoid.

It may seem like a small change but it really changes gameplay with master chief able to use his jetpack to fly from one side of the planet to the other, making gameplay a lot less linear and meaning threats can come from any angle.

As for game mechanics, many fans will be disappointed at the prevalence of quick time events and the fact that most of this game takes place in third person view.

There is no sign of the alien covenant this time, as master chief explores the installation, and attempts to discover the truth all while dealing wih a damaged and needy cortana who won't give him a moment's rest. Interestingly, the Chief has a lot more dialogue this time around - more than in all the past Halo games combined. The story is pretty lackluster though and doesn't really go anywhere, leaving you with the standard sequel-bait cliffhanger and a lack of resolution.

The graphics are pretty good this time around with lots of fancy particle effects. Lots of explosions and debris flying all over the place. Unfortunately the colours are quite washed out and desaturated, back to the old problem of 'next gen' colour palettes.

As for the audio, there isn't much deviation from the classic halo soundtrack so if you liked it then you'll like it now.

    9.4/10. Editors Choice

I loved that trailer but wasn't expecting much from the game.
  • I loved the trailer too, but new that it had no bearing on what the game would play like.

Glad I passed on the game. Much rather cheevo hunt in dead rising 2.
  • ^It was a really cool trailer, but without actual gameplay footage, you can't really determine what the game will be like. Now if it had been a movie...

lol seriously, why do people think these prerendered trailers have anything to do with gameplay whatsoever*. dead island didn't even prettend to. it just said 'hey a new zombie game you guys. it takes place on an island!'

    * = I'm only doing it as parody.

    It's not just you.
  • Halo 4
    7.5/10

    - Halo Reach 1.5
    - story is inconsistent and predictable
    - multiplayer is good (if it were reach dlc)
    - not too many changes to the halo formula
    - still sells millions on day 1
    - fans and critics are worried about the future of halo
    on the Xbox 720
