PS3. Yea or Nay?
  • So I found a used PS3 for $100. Apparently it is a old 'fat' 160GB. It is being sold with a sealed copy of Socom. No controllers are included. I was thinking about buying it but had some questions:

    1. Do PS3s have any issues with breaking, specifically the older ones (ex. RROD)?
    2. Do PS3s get consoles bans due to online douchebaggery?
    3. Do PS2 controllers work on the PS3 or will I need to get actual PS3 controllers?

    Thanks.
  • 100 bucks, why not give 'er a try?
With no controllers though, id say its not really worth it to get an old used one...
Since a new one wouldnt be too much more, and it will come with a controller and its new.

From what I remember... PS3s used to get the YLOD (Yellow Light of Death), which is a dead system. AFAIK they arent as good as Xbox in the warranty department either
  • 1. The older models might suffer from the laser burning out, or the YLOD (yellow light of death). Make sure you find out the units history prior to purchase, as its most likely out of warranty if its an old phat model.
    2. Not that Ive heard of...but profiles will get banned, but there free to make so no biggy.
    3. No...you need a controller for the PS3

As Hawks mentioned, honestly, you would be better off getting a brand new console. PS3 controllers are 50-60 bucks...and for an extra 100 you could just get a brand new system which are much better quality wise and it would have a brand new warranty.
  • I could never in good faith suggest buying a used console these days for that price.

They just break too damn easy.

PS3 and Xbox are the only ones I have any experience with.. but in that experience, I've seen them all go down, taken care of or not.

Unless the dude selling it is a personal friend who will give you like a buddy warranty or something.. I wouldn't go for it.
  • I would say no, I bought mine for $200 brand new on Boxing Day, and I think I saw Wal-Mart with one for $200 as well the other day.
  • As for a PS2 controller..
You can, but you need an adapter.

My friend has an adapter that lets him use a PSone controller on his PS3, so PS2 controller should work as well. The PS button is on the adapter.
  • yeah with no controllers? i'd just get a new one in that case. controllers are expensive. sure they're not $200 for a controller but still. by the time you get a controller you may as well get a new unit with warranty etc, just wait for a sale and you can prob get one for 200-250

There 250 to start with right now. So ya, its better buying new.
  • well there you go. I thought they were a cool 300. shows how much I know. I only buy things on sale anyhow :P
  • Awesomesauce. Thanks for the info everyone. Methinks I'll take a pass on this particular 'deal'.

Another quick question though. Would a 160GB hard drive be big enough, or will I find myself running out of room pretty fast? I have a 60 GB on my XBox and I've owned it since Fallout 3 was released and still have a bit of room, if that's any indication of how much stuff I download.
  • See it as about the same as an Xbox HDD, 160GB should be enough for the casual gamer who only plays a few games. For someone who buys lots of DLC/Arcade Games + Install/Play many retail games you may run out of room quickly. Just make sure you take that into consideration if you decide to get yourself one as the HDD is internal and can't be replaced unfortunately (hope PS4 won't be like that).

If I'm not mistaken, the PlayStation 3's HDD can also be upgraded legitimately by the user, as it's just a laptop HDD. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I`ve seen the kits to upgrade them at stores.
  • I have a 160gb HDD model...and it is plenty big enough...I have about 10 or show episodes of their Qore show...which are about 1.7 gb,give or take, each and a couple of movies installed as well.

^This. Its super easy, so dont let HDD size factor into your decision.
  • Easy to replace/upgrade and 160 is plenty big.
  • I have a fatty, works fine and 160gb is more than enough with my main console being my 360. I would definitely go new in this case as well because you can always buy it in a bundle too and places Best Buy and FShop sometimes tosses in some games just to buy there.
  • My friend has one of those ps2-ps3 controller converters, but doesnt work very well.

As for the memory, 160 is more than enough. If ur like me, u prob game more on the 360. Ive owned over 60-70 xbox games, but havent owned more than 10 ps3 games. My xbox 120g is almost full, but ive got about 90% of my ps3 160g still left.

Didn't know. Was sure the PS3 HDD was soldered (or however it is spelled) thus couldn't be removed.

As for the GB space thing, if like me you have/play many games then 160GB will barely be enough. As an example, my Xbox 360 250GB barely has 50GB free space at this point only 'cause i pass my time deleting installed games from it and keep it clean (got about 15 games installed + over 50 XBLA titles + other data like avatar items, profile, account settings, etc). As for my PS3, at the moment my HDD is pretty much empty but that's only 'cause i didn't start buying the somewhat 30 games i want from the PS Store which will pretty much fill it up. The way it's going right now, i will need at least 1TB HDD for the next Gen Consoles.

Anywho, this is an example of how quickly those HDD can run out of free space, if like me you play/own many different games that keeps pilling up in the gaming library.
