External HD problem.
  • I just changed from Bell TV to Shaw TV today and I got a free HD PVR with it when I did. When I was on Bell I had a 500GB HD attached to the receiver so that we could PVR TV shows. Since I got the free HD PVR I decided I was going to use the 500GB HD for stuff on my PC, this is where the problem starts.

I plugged it into my computer and it makes the beep sound like it is being recognized, but it doesn't appear under "My Computer". I am quite baffled as I have never seen this before. Is anybody willing to try helping me get the hard-drive to work? Help is GREATLY appreciated and thank you in advance.

EDIT: I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I have never seen this kind of HD before. The HD attaches to the PC via USB cable, but also runs off of it's own power plugged into the wall.

Ok, I am so confused. I found that, and it shows that my HD is for sure being detected, but it is still not showing up in "My Computer". (Click TO Enlarge)

  • I'd say its a built in feature to prevent pirating movies/TV shows. Reformatting may not work as I think its in the firmware itself. So getting it to work on your PC will not work if my theory is correct. I've heard of this type of thing before.
  • i think i know whats wrong but i need sleep before investigating. ill look into it another time.
  • @Rajio That would be greatly appreciated, sir.
  • Right click on each partition and try to change the drive letter to something that you're not currently using... Then should then show up in My Computer and you should be able to use them.

Also, they're likely formatted with some proprietary file system, so if you want to use it and there's nothing on there you need, you could just format it to see if that helps.

As for an HDD that runs off power off a wall, almost all external HDDs do that, only the portable ones run off computer power alone. The difference is that the ones that run off external power are less portable, while the portable one is (AFAIK&U) is a bit slower due to less power.
  • @DjDatz I cannot do anything with it though. If I right click them, all the options are greyed out and unclickable.
  • Can you format them, provided you have nothing on them you need?
  • No because it doesn't show up in "My Computer" and in the place in the picture above, the format option is one of the greyed out options when you right click. It is so meseed up.

But yes, I am willing to format it if I can figure out how to.
  • oh
have you tried to map the drive letter?
i forgot to look this up but with a new hdd you have to assign a drive letter in windows before it shows up in my computer.
  • @Rajio How would I do that. As far as I can tell I can't do anything with it.
EDIT: I just looked it up and mapping the drive letter is also one of the greyed out unclickable items. The only item that is clickable is delete. What would happen if I just deleted the three partitions on the HD?

  • Have you tried accessing it from DOS?
  • @JohnnyXeo I have no clue what that means. I am good with almost every aspect of a computer, except for all the technical stuff.

That's what I was trying to get him to do. You don't always have to do it, only if the drive wants to take the drive letter that is already in use.
  • Dunno what to do about it now. I have tried everything that I could think of other than deleting the three different partitions on the HD. I don't know what will happen if I do, so I won't do it.

Deleting partitions just marks them as empties, and that may actually be the solution to your woes.
  • @DjDatz So it wont do anything to wreck the HD? I just want to make sure I don't end up messing it up.
EDIT: Just deleted them and it let me assign a drive letter (I picked Q cause it's awesome) and it is now formatting. Thanks.
