Doom 3 BFG Edition

  • I'm a huge fan of Doom 3, but I'm very curious to know if the game is a remastered version of the PC game or Xbox game. In my opinion, the Xbox version had far better pacing and was the superior game gameplay wise.

The Flashlight mod will be included in this version.
  • Ya I had the collectors edition for the xbox. I loved the game , it was great. Not sure if I will pick this up though or not. Leaning towards not.

I had the PC version (gave it to my father) and the Xbox Limited Collector's Edition. While the PC version looked better and was longer with less loading, the Xbox version simply had far better pacing and atmosphere out-of-the-box.

I might pick this up depending on the cost of admission (or wait for a price drop).

It'll also come with copies of Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil (the last of which I believe will be remastered as well).
  • RoE i have for xbox as well but i started playing it but barely got anywhere before something else distracted me.

Im not sure id revisit doom or doom 2 now since i played the snot out of them years ago. including all the expansions

I also have Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil on my Xbox. It was okay, but not as good as Doom 3.

I played the shit out of Ultimate Doom back in the day and again on my Xbox and then my Xbox 360, and I'd likely do it again. I was never a big fan of Doom II though; couldn't stand the wide open areas and preferred the corridor crawl.
  • Well its just like you to not like anything good so.....

I loved doom 2. I also had some crazy vietnam mod for it at one point that bakc then was really cool. Though all the sound clips were from the movie platoon.

Pft, says you. Doom II was nothing more than a glorified expansion set marketed and sold as a sequel (it was even happening back in 1994!).

  • Don't mind me, I'm just gonna be in my lonely corner being super pumped for this.

    Yeah! Doom!

Seriously, you two, continue. Pretend I'm not here.
  • Doom was just a wolfenstein and blake stone rip-off.

Never played Blake, but Doom was an advancement over Wolfenstein 3D in many ways. Doom II was less so over Doom (at least I think so).
  • maybe so but not all sequels need to be major advancements to be called a sequel . Sometimes you want more of the same . and a double barrel shotgun!

That's what expansion sets are for!
  • aaaargh!
  • Being able to have a flashlight and gun at the same time? TOTALLY WORTH IT!

I swear I'm the only person I know who wasn't bothered by that.
  • This news surprised me.

Although I've owned two copies of the game, I've never finished it...for some reason. I bought it for PC the day it came out, but it didn't run well on my computer, even on minimal settings. And the Xbox version went into my backlog, and I only really started playing it three years into the 360's life cycle. By then, I found it a bit boring because of the repetitive hallways and predictable scares, which didn't bug me as much when it was first released.

I'll probably check this re-release out to give it another chance and play through its entire campaign. But, I doubt it'll be a day one purchase on my end.

  • So...there testing the waters to see if Doom is still relevant in today's market. Interesting...Doom 4 might still come out.

Looks like. The price point will be a big thing though. At full retail I couldn't justify it, but around $30.00, I'd likely bite, even if it is the PC version of Doom 3 (which I expect).
  • Thats a good point. are games like doom still relevant when the masses want call of duty type games?

Look at duke Forever. People hate that game and IMO it is tons of fun. It feels really old school and i think thats why people didnt enjoy it.

I couldn't stand Duke Nukem Forever's driving controls (in the demo). If it wasn't for that, I'd likely pick it up now since it's dirt cheap.
  • I will say this again. I preordered the game, picked up my MVP pass and downloded the demo early. I hated the demo. The driving sucked and that mine level was horrid. That alone made me cancel my preoder.

I didnt buy the game. Then one day I got an email from whoever does duke forever and they said my MVP pass entitled me to get the new 10 dollars multiplayer DLC for free. That same day Duke forever was on steam for 10 bucks. SO i said meh why not? and downloaded it.

I enjoyed it thoroughly. Even the driving. (which i hated in the demo) it was really fun. I havent beat the game but am 7 hours in and loved every minute so far. So much that im likely to buy the new campaign addon when i beat the main game.
  • I enjoyed Duke Nukem Forever. Its worth the $10 bucks I think its sitting at in stores.
  • @Law212 Cool. Maybe one day I will pick it up.

@LegendofMyth Just checked and yeah, it's now $9.99. It was $19.99 not too long ago. I also just got a $5.00 Best Buy Reward Zone certificate...
  • I never had the balls to finish Doom 3 back when. I got to the part where that wheelchair monster bursts through a window, and I turned off my Xbox. Haven't played it since. I will be picking this up, and fight my fears. Didn't you have to equip your flashlight before, instead of it being shoulder mounted?

Ya. Your flashlight was a separate item, you couldn't have it and the gun out at the same time. I thought it increased the tension, as un-realistic it was.

    Agreed about the tension.

In the Xbox version of Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, the Pistol had a Flashlight by default; it actually was the Flashlight.

i really enjoyed it that way, that alone was responsible for a lot of the tense atmosphere the game had, slowly creeping around corners in the dark hoping there wasnt anything there.

i loved dnf, i got the $100 ce and dont regret it, as a long time duke fan i really liked the collectables that came with it (now part of the mini duke shrine i have on my pc desk). the only nitpick i really had with the game was the lack of secrets weapon stashes and whatnot, duke 3d was full of em.

im really hoping this release of doom 3 wont be over $40, as thats probably the absolute most id be willing to pay for it.
  • I will definitely be trying to pick this one up as Doom 3 was the game that made me the gamer I am today.

I used to play games all the time before Doom 3 but I only played them because it was all I had to do and lots of the time I didn't even enjoy playing them. Doom 3 is the first game I remember other than SMB3 that I actually enjoyed.
  • I heard about this just the other day, I will definitely be picking this up as I haven't played it yet. I like the fact that its not an "arcade title" but then again I dont want to be paying over $40 for a full retail game.

  • The fuck, this isn't Doom 4
  • See, I missed out on Doom 3 and all that jazz. I'm shocked too but that's life. So I'm going to be okay paying full retail price for a game I have never played. If I DID own Doom 3 I would be bitter about this because why pay money for HD textures for a game I already own?
  • @Sintacs Very cool Duke shrine.

@Smoreninja It's only the console versions being remastered, so if you have the PC version, I expect it'll look more or less the same. Also, if this is the PC version being ported to consoles, the pacing will be different, as will some of the level design, from the Xbox version.

  • This article kind of sums up how I feel about the original Doom 3 Flashlight.
  • I had the PC edition of Doom 3 but never completed it. A bug prevented me.

Dude, game breaking bugs really don't seem to like you :(.
  • I might be interested in this. I liked Doom 3. I liked the whole flashlight set up in it.

As others have stated, it added tension to the game.

If it looks really good (graphics wise) it might be enough of a selling point for me to pick it up again if the price is right.
  • 29.99 for PC version. I mght not be able ot pass that up. Do console gamers have to pay a 10 dollar F U tax?

I just mean in general , not only for this game.

  • $40 is too much for me. It's something I'd rather rent or borrow than own at this point. Or pick up for $10-20.
  • I will buy this game, as I have already said. What I won't do is go and claim that id is the messiah for adding a new coat of paint to what is essentially nostalgia. Since DOOM 3 is a brand new experience for me I will be able to see if it holds up to the games of today.

Yeah, same. Console gamers usually have to pay a "console tax" on any title.

Thats why I buy multiplatform games on PC when possible.

  • Seems that DOOM will come with "The Lost Mission"
No idea what to think of it but still looking forward to playing Doom 3 come October.

So is it just a new level, or a small Campaign?
  • No clue! All I know is that it will slightly terrify me and I am okay with that.

Just watch out when you throw Grenades, the game's odd physics make them bounce like rubber balls. Usually right back into you :(.
  • Hrm here comes the decision Xbox or pc version.... Da da da da

My inability to regularly use grenades will finally pay off!

@ozzi I'm going 360. My return to DOOM has been on the 360, first time playing DOOM 2 was on the 360, it's only fair I keep the pattern going.
