If Sony does this...
  • They are thinking about putting commercials in between your gaming.

    Fucken BAAAD idea...
  • I don't mind product placement but this would piss me off.

  • M$ are also about to launch more ads on XBOX Live, specifically in the TV and video app sections.

I'm with Smore. Product placement, doesn't generally bother me(unless its thrown in your face) but theres no way I would want my game to pause mid game play, to show me a 30 second ad.

What I don't mind terribly, is on iPad games a lot of them have 15-30 second ads that you can choose to watch between games, and if you do so, you earn in-game currency. I don't mind that.(I suppose those games are also on the iPhone etc, but I play them on the iPad)

  • Fuck you Sony. If this is ever implemented, I'm done with gaming.
  • I don't even like a 5 second bit of an ad before I can skip and watch my YouTube video. D:
  • Are you kidding me?

This. Or at least with PS3.
  • Hahahaha! Bunch of idiots they are thinking they can get away with that without losing a maaaaaaaajor customer base.

I can't even stand watching 8 seconds of stupid advertisement before a YouTube video. Interrupting my gaming on the other hand? Hell naw. Not to mention the middle of a game. That would be the worst.
  • probably a patient for patient sakes
I can't see them doing this it would be a pr nightmare after all the backlash
  • Well you know loading screens are ripe for advertisment placement, as are multiplayer mid-game lobby screens and scoreboards.

This. Not the same gay PS move commercials tho, like at least a good alternating dozen

  • I do believe your all jumping to conclusions.

Sony is pressing into the F2P genre of gaming (especially their Sony Online studio, with that shooter coming out) and this would most definitally pertain to those titles.

Its no different than you guys using Crackle to watch free movies/TV Shows and getting ads in-between them to PAY for it.

The internet has become this place from which people like to take the smallest little thing and blow it out of proportion. I would hate to see how any of you deal with actual real life issues...

There is nothing right now that even hints at it coming...just a patent that was filed back in 2011...companies file thousands of them every year. Sony has said nothing, no studio has said anything...

You guys saying shit like "Fuck you Sony. If this is ever implemented, I'm done with gaming. " especially the FUCK YOU SONY part...its like blaming someone for something they haven't done. Or hating for the sake of hating.

Calm the fuck down...stop blowing this shit out of proportion...go outside and do something productive.

  • Crackle is gay as fuck because of the ads. Which is why I don't use it. "Fuck you Sony" is a little much on something that's not confirmed, but as Lactos said; IF this is implemented, then I'd be done with PS3 as well. If it wasn't for every game, I wouldn't play any of the games that have ads.

particularly with regards to video games.
  • Video games are srs bsns, bro.
  • If Sony does that we'll send 'em @Whorror as a Vendetta act.
  • I think it's a terrible idea, which will drive people away and ruin immersion - the one thing video game developers strive for. Product placement can be important in order to generate revenue, but it needs to remain in the less invasive state it is in now.

I sincerely hope this won't come to console gaming.
  • I always felt that video games needed something like this. I think that having adverts to watch in between sections of games might break things up a bit. Like commercials in between TV shows. Love it!
  • I'm actually really tolerant about commercials. Some of you might know that I am a big fan of Loading Ready Run and their videos that are on their site have ads and I am okay with ignoring them while I wait for the video I want to watch. It does help fund them and allows them to continue doing what they love and let me watch content I really enjoy.

With Youtube ads, it's five seconds. My time isn't that precious.

If Loading Screens had ads, video or otherwise, I wouldn't mind because I really don't care about loading screens. Most are bland and boring anyways.

What would bother me plenty is if while I'm running down the streets of New York in Prototype 2, I start a fight with everything in sight and then the game suddenly stops and I have to watch an ad.

I really didn't know anything about Sony doing any sorta F2P shindig and while I can appreciate the fact that the ad that suddenly stopped me from having fun is paying for me to have fun, it would still rub me the wrong way.

Yes, this is all rumour and speculation but if this were true based on what I did know it would piss me off.

LRR are pretty awesome. I must admit I haven't actually watched any videos in a LONG time now, but I used to watch them a lot. I bought their I have 3 PS3s t-shirt, and I actually went and saw them live at The Rio theatre a couple years ago. I also met Paul Saunders at EAC one day when I was out there testing a game. The whole crew were there, but I only saw him. They were shooting some stuff for videos.

Need to get back into watching their videos...

I can't think of any game on consoles that does what you stated...nor can I see any evidence that even remotely hints at that happening.

So I ask you (and all else who are thinking it) why the fuck is your mind jumping straight to that conclusion? Its like your all looking for reasons to get angry...

Not singling people out, or pointing fingers. It just baffles my fuckin mind.
  • I first read the article at Game Informer. After you questioned me I did read the patent file that GI provided and it does show what I theorized to be how they plan to implement this. Well, the pretty sketches did at least, I haven't read the text.
  • That's it. I'm going back to reading book. SEE WHAT YOU MADE ME DO SONY!!

Well, the thread is about a patent from Sony that specifically states it will stop games to show you commercials.. so.. no conclusion jumping. Just people sounding off about the topic.

Yes, it is conclusion jumping...it doesn't state anything about what type of games it would be implemented in, people are already casting fire down on them...and no one has said a single thing about it. Its ENTIRELY conclusion jumping Doos...

Until Sony or some developer comes out and says shit, it can't possibly be anything else...especially since the information is coming from a fuckin PATENT filing, which there are thousands of every year.

No, it's not conclusion jumping. Let's just highlight the key features of the patent.

    - Will pause the game
    - Will display commercial
    - Will resume the game right where it paused off
    - Will allow the player to rewind gameplay slightly to recover from the commercial break.

Here is what it is NOT

    - An ad displayed on the bottom of the screen a la "Angry Birds"
    - An ad displayed on a loading screen
    - An ad displayed at game startup/shutdown

This patent is so specific that it only has a few real world applications. As far as the "This might only be for the F2P market" keep in mind that most F2P games either multiplayer (F2P MMO's, DoTA clones, Strategy games) or casuals (Anything popcap makes.)

Popcap already understands how to make ads work in casual games. And F2P games get by mostly on microtransactions or other forms of sponsorship. Yes, there is room for this technology in something like an F2P RTS, but this is far from an elegant solution. It's designed to be obtrusive, and unignorable, and that's the main problem.
  • And here is what what we DO know, like...100%...

    1. Its a Patent
    2. Sony has not officially said anything about anything to anyone
    3. No Developer has said anything about anything to anyone
    4. Its a Patent

So...if there is zero official word on it, by ANYONE involved...and its just a patent, which has little to no value in life (I can tell you now, Nintendo holds thousands of patents for things that never saw the light of day, and every other company on the face of the planet as well).

Now, we have people who are already burning Sony for this. And you don't call it jumping to conclusions? Do you know what the word conclusion means? Because if the only defense you have is "its in a patent that no one has said anything about" then your doing exactly that...jumping to a conclusion. Your already burning a company for something they haven't even done yet.

If I were a writer and decided to write a script for a film, you need to copyright the story in two different stages. If I were a designer and I made a new product, you would need to copyright/patent the design. Have you ever seen the show "Dragon's Den"? 99% of the shit that goes through that show never sees the light of day...even though most of it is already patented.

  • Yes. It's a patent. It's an 'if'.

Just like all of the comments saying 'If this is implemented, I'd feel this way about it.'

You're jumping to the conclusion that everyone is jumping to conclusions.

Everyone is just sounding off with their feelings if this came to be.

Then you were baffled by that... and here we are.

  • Lol...look at Doos, trying to be smart and logical.

Ill give you an A for effort.

But no...I know how to read. Ive re-read the first page and what it looks like, is a bunch of people jumping to conclusions. The only person who used the word IF did it in reverse of what you stated...he said FUCK YOU SONY, PERIOD, THEN IF.

Its funny how two statements can pretty much mean the same thing. Jumping to conclusions...sounding off...whatever you want to call it, its wrong. Speak theoretically all you want, but bashing a company for something they haven't even done (and people were bashing it) is neither productive nor helpful.

Do you honestly think your opinion or thoughts matter when the only words you can muster are "FUCK YOU" then "INSERT COMPANY NAME HERE".

    Condescending much?

The fact that Sony filed a patent as specific as this shows intent. Let's look at a few of the past consumer unfriendly moves they have pulled.

    - They removed third party OS support on the PS3
    - They sued the hell out of the guy who jailbroke the PS3, despite the fact that Jailbreaking is legal in most cases, and has mostly legal uses (including the uses of the US Military)
    - During the first week of the PSN outage they didn't provide any details of what was going on, and it took them ages to tell customers that their private data (credit card info) may in fact have been at risk.
    - They include a clause in their EULA that prevents people from suing them (which is itself legally dubious,) and make it mandatory to play most of your games.

Let's also take into account that this is SONY. The same company that sold the PS3 at a massive loss for years because it would be bleeding edge. After losing HARD in the VHS fight. That had to bribe massive amounts of companies just to have Blue Ray be the standard against a superior compeditor. The reason people are up in arms is because this patent seems exactly like the sort of thing that Sony would do, because they A) don't learn from their mistakes and B) because they don't seem to respect their customers.
  • ... because they A) don't learn from their mistakes and B) because they don't seem to respect their customers.

That sounds perfectly like Sony to me.

  • from a business point of view, most of those aren't mistakes.
  • Regardless of my tone (which is kinda condescending, sorry, I come off rough) without any word from Sony or any developer, the hate is fueled by nothing more than mindless arrogance.

And Rajio is right. Sony is a business, not your BFF.
  • Regardless of my tone (which is kinda condescending, sorry, I come off rough) without any word from Sony or any developer, the hate is fueled by nothing more than mindless arrogance.

To be fair, you can say the same about most people's excitement for random games before they're out too.

"OMG Black Ops 2 IS GOING TO BE GOTY!" "YOU GUYS! HALO 4 SUCKS!" ....really? have you played it? lol. MY favourite is people commenting before there is anything even known about the game other than the title.

Everyone's eager to share their opinion, and to present it as fact.
  • To me, it looks like a bunch of sheep flocking together and spouting a bunch of misdirected hate at a topic they literally know nothing about...but hell, its the internet, right? I guess that's common.

    Howl for us, baby.
  • You can swing it both ways, yes. And it's what juxt mentioned that turns this from "sounding off" into "jumping to conclusions".
  • Filing a patent shows intent. Otherwise it's just an idea. That patent is in place to protect that idea, should they choose to use it.

Just because they haven't done so, doesn't mean people can't condemn the idea. Hence the point of the thread.

Having a differing opinion on the general consensus that it's a bad idea is one thing, calling people 'sheep' and saying their posts are useless and that should 'go do something productive' is another.

The point I'm trying to make is, why do you feel the need to be so rude with your opinion?

    We're all friends around here.

Also, with the actual topic, how would you feel if this patent was implemented?
Post edited by Doos at 2012-05-31 10:47:22
  • My issue is not with people disagreeing with the patent...my issue is people bashing a company for something they have not done, and have said nothing about. Mentioning again my condescending nature really is hilarious when you take into account your trying to defend peoples CONDESCENDING behavior towards a company that hasn't done anything wrong about the topic at hand.

My opinion has nothing to do with this...this wasn't a debate. I don't care what their opinion is vs anyone elses. You can hate on whatever you want, whenever you want. Its a free world...just don't act so surprised when someone comes along and tells you how foolish you are when that hate is misdirected.

Flock of sheep...that is the current state of the internet.

  • Flock of sheep...that is the current state of the internet.

It's not restricted to the internet, the net just let's it spread (and be seen) far, far faster.

  • I think people were bashing a company for what they intend to do. Doesnt matter if they have done it yet or not.

Just because you think they are being foolish doesnt mean you are right and they are wrong. Maybe you might be a bit naive thinking that sony wouldnt go through with it
  • The only two people I see "bashing" on the first page (all posts before Mythologies post) was Lactos with his "Fuck you Sony" comment, and maybe Dinosaurus. lolz

This has gone in a direction that was totally irrelevant.
